Male
Involvement
The
Family Planning Council of Iowa recognizes the value and importance of
addressing the reproductive and sexual health needs of men. We believe
that males should not be viewed solely as partners of female clients,
but as individuals with their own health care needs and concerns. All
FPCI delegate agencies provide confidential family planning services
for males.
These services include:
Clinical
-
STD screening and treatment
-
Testicular cancer screening
Education
-
Condoms and their proper use
-
How to reduce unplanned pregnancies
-
How to reduce risky sexual behavior
-
How to enhance decision making skills
Do guys need to get reproductive health exams too?
It is a good idea for males who are sexually active to be screened
for STDs. They can also receive information about condom use and learn
how to perform a self testicular exam.
Should guys be concerned about family planning?
Men need to understand that pregnancy prevention is the
responsibility of both partners in a relationship and that children
benefit from the support of both parents.
Condom Usage
Be a responsible partner. Many men have sex without even considering
using a condom. You should not assume that your partner is using some
type of birth control. Using condoms allows you to take responsibility
toward reducing unwanted pregnancies and spreading sexually
transmitted diseases. A condom can actually save your life.
How Do I Use a Condom?
- Put on a new condom as soon as
your penis gets hard and erect.
- Leave a half-inch of space at the
end of the condom to catch semen.
- Pinch the tip to keep air out.
- Unroll the condom to the base of
the penis with the opposite hand.
After Sex
After ejaculation, withdraw your penis while it is still erect.
Hold the condom firmly against the base of the penis to prevent
slippage and leakage of semen.
Check the condom for visible damage
such as holes. Then, wrap it in tissue and discard.
Condom Storage
Condoms should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct
sunlight.
Check the expiration or manufacturer's date on the box or individual
package of condoms.
Condoms in damaged packages or that show obvious signs of
deterioration should not be used regardless of their expiration date.
